Dialysis | Why is dialysis used | types of dialysis
What is Dialysis?
The kidneys filter your blood by filtering waste and extra
fluid from the body. This waste is sent to the bladder and eliminated when
urinate.
Dialysis performs the function of kidneys when they failed.
End-stage kidney failure occurs when kidneys perform only 10 to 15 present of
their regular function.
Dialysis is a treatment in which blood is filtered and
purified by using a machine. This helps keep your fluids in balance.
Why is dialysis used?
Properly functioning kidneys filter extra water, waste, and
impurities from the body. They help to control blood pressure and balance
levels of chemical elements in the blood. These elements include potassium sodium and phosphors
When your kidneys can’t perform their function due to
disease, dialysis helps to regulate body functions to be as normal as possible.
Without dialysis salt and waste products will gather in blood, this can damage
other organs. However, dialysis does not cure kidney disease.
What are the different types of dialysis?
Haemodialysis
This the most common type of dialysis. This process uses an
artificial kidney to filter waste and extra fluid from the blood. The blood is
removed from the body and filtered by the artificial kidney. The filtered blood
again returned to the body with the help of a dialysis machine.
Peritoneal dialysis
This process involves surgery to implant peritoneal dialysis catheter into your abdomen. The catheter helps in the filtration of blood
through the peritoneum, which is a membrane in the abdomen. During treatment, a
fluid called dialysate flows into the peritoneum. The dialysate absorbs waste.
Once the dialysate takes waste out of the blood, it’s drained from your
abdomen.
Continuous renal
replacement therapy (CRRT)
This therapy is used when the patient is suffering from
acute kidney failure. It’s also known as hemofiltration. A machine passes the
blood through the tube, a filter removes waste and water and the blood is
returned to the body, along with replacement fluid. This procedure is performed
12 to 24 hours.
