PROSTATE CANCER

What is Prostate Cancer?

The prostate is a small gland, about the size of a walnut, just below the bladder in Men. It produces a thick, white fluid that mixes with sperm to make semen.

What is Cancer?

Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body. Cancer develops when the body’s normal control mechanism stops working. Old cells do not die and instead grow out of control, forming new, abnormal cells. These extra cells may form a mass of tissue, called a tumor.

What are the causes of prostate cancer?

Researchers do not know exactly what causes prostate cancer. But they have found some risk factors like change in the DNA, Inflammation of the Prostate Gland, Exposure to radiation, etc.

Signs & Symptoms of Prostate Cancer:

Most prostate cancers are found early, through screening. Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. More advanced prostate cancers can sometimes cause symptoms, such as:

  • Blood in the urine or semen
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Pain in the hips, back (spine), chest (ribs), or other areas of cancer that has spread to bones
  • Weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, or even loss of bladder or bowel control for cancer pressing on the spinal cord.

The first decision to be made in managing prostate cancer is whether treatment is needed. Prostate cancer, especially low-grade forms found in elderly men, often grows,s so slowly that no treatment is required. Treatment may also be inappropriate if a person has other serious health problems or is not expected to live long enough for symptoms to appear. The various forms of treatments include:
·        Watchful waiting or active surveillance
·        Surgery
·        Radiation therapy and radiopharmaceutical therapy
·        Hormone therapy
·        Chemotherapy
·        Biologic therapy

Importance of Prostate Cancer Screening: A step towards Prevention/ Early detection:

Men who are at risk of developing Prostate Cancer is recommended to get a PSA test done once/year.
·       PSA levels under 4 ng/ml of blood are considered normal.
·       PSA level between 4 and indicates a 1 in 4 chance of having prostate cancer
